Things to See and Do in Outback QLD

Whatever the interest, Outback Queensland has an activity, experience, or attraction that is sure to compel.

Hear stories about the eerie Min Min Light at Boulia. A theatrical show at the Min Min Encounter delves into the mystery around this orange glow.

During the dry season, base yourself at Burketown to glimpse the bizarre Morning Glory Cloud, a meteorological phenomenon. Or be blown away by the night sky at the Cosmos Centre & Observatory in Charleville.

See abundant fossils and gems from across the globe – as well as a 7m-tall replica of a Muttaburrasaurus – at the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden. Kronosaurus Korner fossil museum in Richmond also details this theme. About 60km from Hughenden is extremely picturesque Porcupine Gorge National Park.

A standout attraction in Outback Queensland is the Australian Fossil Mammal Site in Riversleigh, which is inscribed on the World Heritage List. It’s within Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, which contains breathtaking gorges and beautiful sandstone landscapes.

If you can’t make it to Boodjamulla, head to the Riversleigh Fossil Centre at nearby Mount Isa. This city is one of several Outback Queensland destinations with a compelling past. In fact, the range of historical themes to unearth in this region is astronomical.

Mount Isa’s rich mining heritage is explored thoroughly at the Outback at Isa complex, which includes underground mine tours and the Isa Experience.

The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre in Longreach provides a comprehensive guide to the region. Remain at Longreach to learn about our national airline at the Qantas Founders Museum.

The Australian Workers Heritage Centre in Barcaldine, the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, and the Burke & Wills ‘Dig Tree’ at Cooper Creek (accessed from Thargomindah) are other fascinating historical attractions.

Events don’t come much better than the annual Birdsville Races (September), which are on the bucket list of many racegoers. In Boulia, it’s more quirky – watch camels race each July.
