The hype is tangible.
Months before BIG4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort was officially welcomed into the BIG4 network, we received many messages from the public asking about the park.
That interest has only escalated since news broke that BIG4 Sandstone Point is on the cusp of opening and is now taking bookings.
This brand-new Queensland accommodation option is owned by the Comiskey Group. And as the resort prepares to welcome its very first guests, we sat down with Sandstone Point co-owner and director, Rob Comiskey, to chat about this exciting and bold venture.
And as you’ll soon discover, this park is set to blow your mind…
Ever since we bought the land, we knew we had to do something special with it. The neighbouring Sandstone Point Hotel, which we also own, has been a smashing success with locals having a new place to dine and newcomers visiting for the food, the views, and the entertainment.
Demand for on-site accommodation only increased once big acts started performing at the hotel, and we knew it was time to action our plan to expand.
So now, not only will concertgoers have a place to stay but the resort will be a destination in itself, offering world-class facilities all in an exquisite location.
"The resort will be a destination in itself, offering world-class facilities all in an exquisite location."
After researching and staying in some of the best hotels and resorts in Australia, we took elements from our favourite stays to create an unforgettable experience for our guests. We know the results will speak for themselves.
We have taken on big projects before but this new venture into the holiday park industry has been a learning curve. As we own a construction company, in addition to owning and operating our businesses, it means we build what we plan.
The development has been challenging like any new project, but BIG4 has been an immense help, particularly in supporting and advising our general manager.
We have never opened a resort before but have certainly done our research staying in some of Australia’s best resorts and gathering insights from helpful park owners.
You’ll find us on the glistening shores of Pumicestone Passage, a stone’s throw from iconic Bribie Island. As we’re halfway between the Brisbane CBD and the Sunshine Coast, there is plenty to do with magnificent beaches and scenic bushland showcasing the best of South East Queensland escapes.
As I’ve mentioned, the resort is also situated on the same property as the Sandstone Point Hotel, which has been named winner of Australia’s Best Hotel and Queensland’s Best Entertainment Venue.
We’ve hosted some of the finest musical talent the world has to offer there, including Bryan Adams, Suzi Quatro, and The Beach Boys.
And the hotel (open daily) extends beyond an entertainment hub to become a unique establishment that’s desirable for any break. It has a beautiful restaurant, waterfront fish and chippery, petting zoo, playground, kids’ room, bar, gaming room, and function spaces.
It’s perfect for resort guests: sit back with a drink in hand and enjoy local acoustic artists on the waterfront every weekend.
So likewise, the resort is set to not only be convenient for concert and eventgoers but a destination in its own right. Keeping the natural trees on site, it has abundant shading, creating a feeling of being in a relaxing, isolated location. And yet we’re still within easy reach of all sorts of adventure activities.
What was once the land of a successful oyster farm is now home to the resort. In 1875, a guy by the name of James Clark operated a very successful oyster farm out of Pumicestone Passage.
During its peak in the 1900s, James owned more than 30 dredging sections and employed over 25 families all working in the area, which was unheard of at the time. Pumicestone Passage was very important to the livelihood of Moreton Bay, with Clark’s Oyster Farm playing a big part in day-to-day life.
"Pumicestone Passage was very important to the livelihood of Moreton Bay."
Buying the property from the Clark family, who owned it for about 100 years, was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. We were lucky to be able to secure the rare location.
The site not only has a great story behind it but sits across the bridge from iconic Bribie Island with impeccable surroundings.
Note: Paying homage to the land’s past, Rob and his fellow owners have rebuilt the oyster shed, which serves fresh local seafood and chips on the waterfront.
First up, it’s the kids’ waterpark, which has an 800-litre tipping bucket. As a family man, I knew we needed to keep kids happy, and with that came the idea to build a waterpark.
Having just arrived from Turkey, the waterpark is currently being constructed, and workers have just started screwing the 14,000 bolts that the beast needs to be held together. Interestingly, it will need 108 litres of water per second to make the big splash.
Around the hub of the resort – the pool area – will be decking spaces with comfortable lounge-style seating; perfect for kicking back with a drink in hand. The resort will also have a 500sqm adults and kids’ pool, gym, pool room, large chess set, playground, jumping pillow, tennis court, basketball court, kids’ play room, and more!
The resort will offer a wide variety of accommodation, including villas, safari tents, and camping and caravan sites.
Seriously, the stunningly modern, coast-inspired villas will change the way holidaymakers think about cabin-style stays.
Showcasing an oceanic colour palette depicted in the décor and furnishings, every villa will open out to its very own private alfresco dining area with a barbecue, so it’s ideal for intimate meals. The villas either have water, garden, or pool views.
The luxury villas are perfect for a couples’ escape, and the three-bedroom villas suit larger bookings and sleep up to 10.
The safari tents come in two different models, family and luxury, and certainly put the glam into the term ‘glamping’!
The family safari tents sleep five under their trendy canvas roofs and feature their own bathroom and open-plan dining and living area, among other features.
Similarly, the luxury safari tents are just about unbeatable for a cosy, coastal getaway and have features galore.
The beauty of our resort is you can have the experience you desire! We cater perfectly to those wanting a quiet waterfront weekend away, or an adventure-filled family holiday.
And the tranquillity of the surroundings and the luxurious accommodation options make for relaxing stays for couples seeking a genuine break.
The resort’s exciting facilities and nearby activities – like jet skiing, boating, surfing, skydiving as well as beaches, 4X4 tracks, etc. – make for a holiday suited to families and adventure seekers. We really do have something for everyone!
We are proud to be a part of a brand that represents high quality and outstanding service. We looked at other holiday park chains, but BIG4 was always the frontrunners in our minds.
After much research, we found park owners to be well looked after with BIG4, and the exposure gained from being associated with the brand is second to none. We look forward to opening the resort with your guidance and support.
The resort is currently taking bookings for stays from 1 November this year. We aim to be open earlier, but with the major facilities going in and our perfectionist approach to the project, it may take longer. We promise it will be worth the wait!
