Wonga Wetlands is a sanctuary for birdwatchers, nature lovers, photographers and bushwalking groups. Just a short drive from Albury, wandering through the wetlands is an idyllic way to wind down, enjoy nature and experience the ever-changing beauty of the Murray River floodplain. Wonga is also a valuable educational experience for school groups and special interest tours.
Located on the Murray River floodplain, Wonga Wetlands is being carefully restored from former grazing land using Albury City's environmentally treated wastewater. An ecosystem of lagoons and billabongs covering 80 hectares of Murray River flood plain, the wetlands are home to a diverse range of wildlife, century old river red gums and an important Indigenous scar tree.
The wetlands change with the seasons, creating a unique experience year-round. In winter, the wetlands are often full to capacity, attracting pelicans, swans and other waterbirds. As spring arrives and water levels recede, exposed muddy shorelines become feeding grounds for hundreds of wading birds. During summer, water levels continue to drop, and some areas may dry out completely. As autumn temperatures cool, the wetlands are flooded once again, and the cycle of life begins anew.
