Kayaking Upper Tuross River and Bumbo Lake

Natural Attractions

Bumbo Lake is on the western side of the Princes Highway near Bodalla. This large, peaceful lake sits between the low lying foothills of the Deua National Park and the patchwork of rural pasture on the flatlands of the Tuross River.

For an 11.4 kilometre one-way trip, launch into shallow water at Snake Flat Reserve on Bumbo Road and paddle up river to Silo Farm Bridge, Comerang Road, landing on the western side of the bridge. Check conditions, water levels and a map past Comerang Road as the river continues on for many kilometres and may be accessible with some rapids.

A shorter paddle from Snake Flat Reserve up the estuary and into Bumbo Lake is around 11 kilometres return if you circumnavigate the lake and explore Bumbo Creek.

To get to Snake Flat Reserve, turn west from the Princes Highway onto Bumbo Road. Travel 1 kilometre down Bumbo Road. A cattle grid and yellow "no camping" sign identifies the entrance to Snake Flat Reserve on your left. No facilities here, but good cafes in Bodalla a 3.7 kilometre drive further south on the Princes Highway.
