5 important tips for safe swimming these summer holidays
Summer is just around the corner, and Australians’ love affair with the water is well-known.
And with dozens of BIG4 parks lining Australia’s majestic coastline, perched on prime riverfront or lakeside locations, and equipped with superb swimming pools, the safety of our guests in and around the water is particularly important to us.
So we’ve teamed with Belgravia Leisure to bring you some essential advice when swimming these summer holidays. Olympic swim champion and Belgravia Leisure Swimming and Water Safety Ambassador Brooke Hanson OAM has shared her top five tips to help us enjoy the water safely this summer.
Stay safe at the beach
The water may look more appealing at a quieter spot at the beach, but if there are no red and yellow flags, then there are no surf lifeguards. Swimming between the flags is much safer, especially if a rip sneaks up on you. Not sure if you’re in a rip? Use a shoreline as your reference and pick a landmark to keep your bearings.
Test the water
Swimming in a freshwater river is a great way to connect with nature. If the water is unclear, check for shallow water and submerged objects such as rocks and logs. Even the lightest of rapids can cause sand to shift, so shallow water can become deeper very quickly.
Eliminate risks around the home
If you have a pool at home, then keep a lookout for hazards such as chairs that can be used to climb over pool fencing. Pool toys and inflatables are fun for kids and adults of all ages, and younger children can be attracted to colourful floating objects left in the pool, so investing in a little pack-up time after each use can remove the temptation.
Learning basic first aid and resuscitation skills is easier than you think! Many workplaces even provide this free of charge to employees. You never know whose life you may end up saving.
Swimming lessons are extremely important and make a huge difference to confidence and safety around water. While swimming tends to be more popular in summer, it’s important children maintain these skills all year round. Now is the perfect time to enrol your child in swimming and water safety programs in preparation for summer. I recommend choosing a reputable swim program such as those managed and run by Belgravia Leisure across 70-plus aquatic centres across Australia.
