Fishing tips in Ballarat

When you think of the historical city of Ballarat, fishing isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, as the team at BIG4 Ballarat Windmill Holiday Park explains, this vibrant regional centre has a great spot to lure anglers.

Ballarat doesn't instantly come to mind when thoughts turn to fishing.

You might know Ballarat for its strong links to Australia’s gold-rush days, but treasure of a different kind can be spotted at magnificent Lake Wendouree.

This centrally located lake is bursting with trout – both rainbow and brown – as well as redfin, ensuring it is a much-loved fishing spot.

You can dangle a line from the shore or jetty, or bring along your ‘tinny’ for a relaxing day out on the lake. Locals tend to opt for bait fishing when trying their luck.

The historical Ballarat Fly Fishers Club calls the lake home and each March it hosts the popular Lake Wendouree Two Fly competition.

And when you are fishing at Lake Wendouree, you’ll have plenty of time to ponder the transformation and history of this picturesque area.

Lake Wendouree was once a swamp but has emerged as a leading Ballarat tourist attraction. And it has an interesting past. Noteworthy facts include that it was used to host rowing, canoeing, and kayaking events during the 1956 Olympic Games. On a more quirky level, there was once a whopping 13 hotels located around the lake!

If the fish aren’t biting, you can always console yourself in the tranquility of the surrounds. On the western shore of the lake is Ballarat Botanical Gardens, and among its many attractions is a series of busts of Australian Prime Ministers.

BIG4 Ballarat Windmill Holiday Park is only a 10-minute drive to the magnificent lake, so we’re the ideal accommodation choice when visiting the city. Be sure to pack your fishing rod and come and see us soon.

The whole family will love BIG4 Ballarat Windmill.
