Tracing your Family Tree in Launceston, Tasmania

Launceston is steeped in a rich and vibrant history.  For the past 40,000 years the Palawa people (Tasmanian Aboriginal people) lived in harmony with the land and performed ceremonial dances and songs at culturally important places which included Launceston's Cataract Gorge. Launceston was then settled by the Europeans in 1806. If your ancestry goes back to the earliest settlements of Australia there is a good chance that you will find your family tree has some branches in Launceston and the surrounding areas. Now the question is: where to begin? Online research can provide some information, but it doesn't offer the atmosphere of visiting where your ancestors have lived and worked. We all know that local knowledge is gold and there are lots of local history buffs who love to share their knowledge so the best starting point is to contact the following:

  • Tasmanian Family History Society
  • Launceston Historical Society
  • QVMAG - Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery
  • LINC Launceston - Launceston Library

We have all of the contact numbers, maps etc to help you climb up that family tree.

Who knows one of your ancestors might be here.
