Get hooked on fishing in Airlie Beach
Experienced angler Matt Tuffy provides us with his thoughts about fishing in and around Airlie Beach following a stay at BIG4 Airlie Cove Resort and Caravan Park.
Paradise to look at, paradise to fish at – welcome to Airlie Beach and the wider Whitsundays region. On my recent travels there I was lucky enough to organise to fish the Whitsunday Islands with a local. We took his boat out to Hook Island and caught a wide variety of reef species, including coral trout and red emperor. The weather was perfect for fishing and we enjoyed truly magnificent scenery.
We also discovered there were big barramundi at the Port of Airlie at night under the flood lights. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t take a lure. However, we did manage to land some nice grunter there.
Funnel Bay, Shute Harbour, the Volunteer Marine Rescue boat ramp, and the dirt boat ramp on Mandalay Road are all worth a look as well. There were indications that all these areas hold solid fish, such as barramundi, mangrove jack, queen fish, salmon, black jewfish, and mackerel.
Upon arrival at BIG4 Airlie Cove Resort and Caravan Park, we were truly amazed at not only the facilities but the overall presentation of the park and friendliness of the staff. It is a credit to the managers. The kids were entertained for hours on the newly built waterpark, giant jumping pillow, and pirate playground. I really enjoyed other park facilities, such as the barbecues, a pizza oven, and an air-conditioned TV/games/internet room.
Airlie Beach has so much to see and do for the whole family, including a free man-made lagoon for safe stinger-free swimming all year round. On Saturdays, the waterfront Airlie Beach Market is a hive of activity. Book your stay at the BIG4 Airlie Cove Resort and Caravan Park below.
