When Australia was divided up into states in 1901, Western Australia walked away with the deal of the century: 2.6million square kilometres of land, almost 21,000km of coastline, its own fringing coral reef and the nation’s best year-round sunshine.

It’s brilliant in so many ways, from the deeply cultural experiences on offer in the state’s southwest to the rugged off-road adventures on offer up north, and dozens of stunning inland and coastal towns full of unique and interesting surprises.

In summer, the southwest comes alive, with sun-seekers flocking to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches and wineries. In winter all roads lead north, following the sun. Coastal towns come alive as adventurers seek thrills where the desert meets the sea.

It’s a state of gigantic proportions and one to add to the bucket list if it’s not already there.
