Point Lonsdale

Listen to the waves, breathe in the fresh sea air and enjoy fun-filled days on the foreshore at this little hamlet on the tip of the peninsula. The picture of seaside tranquillity, complete with historic lighthouse, surf break and calm bay waters, Point Lonsdale has been a favourite for holidaymakers for decades.

Hit the waters at the sheltered bay beach, picnic in the foreshore reserve or enjoy a barbecue lunch with the family. Surfers will love the chance to hit the waves on the back beach, while a wander along Point Lonsdale Pier rewards with views of the lighthouse, The Rip and the surrounding coastline. Catch your dinner by bringing along your rod and reel and casting a line off the pier.

Recharge with a quiet coffee at one the cafes along the esplanade, sample international wines at Nobel Rot Wine Bar, or check out the local shops and boutiques on a wander down main street.

Delve into the local marine history on a tour of the famous Point Lonsdale lighthouse. The lighthouse was used to guide big ships through the treacherous waters of The Rip, the notorious entrance to Port Phillip Bay and one of the world's most dangerous stretches of water.

Find the cave of 'Wild White Man' William Buckley, an escaped convict who lived for 32 years with the local Aboriginal population and reputedly sheltered in a cave under the famous lighthouse.

Point Lonsdale is just over 100 kilometres from Melbourne, or around an hour-and-a-half along the M1 and the Princes Freeway.
