Things to See and Do in Launceston

Founded in 1804, Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities. Several heritage walks reveal resplendent historical structures, such as halls, houses, and hotels. Quadrant Mall boasts an impressive streetscape and Franklin House is worth admiring.

Another engrossing trip back in time is afforded at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. Despite its joint name, the museum and gallery are at different locations, but each provides an almighty collection of items.

The nearby Launceston Tramway Museum and the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania are other absorbing attractions. History and beer come together on a James Boag’s Brewery tour.

Embracing nature is easy in Launceston: Tasmania’s second-largest city teems with parks and gardens. The Japanese macaque enclosure at City Park will delight all ages.

A 15-minute stroll from the Launceston CBD leads to Cataract Gorge. This magnificent wilderness area feels far removed from the city’s buzz and includes walking trails, gardens, and the world's longest single-span chairlift. Or take advantage of easy access to the Tamar Valley, a renowned food and wine region.
