The many glorious beaches serve as a great introduction to Mackay. With such a long stretch of alluring coastline, it's not surprising that swimming, fishing, and snorkelling are among leading leisure activities. 

Yet, what is more surprising is the sight of the many wallabies you’re likely to share a stretch of sand with at Cape Hillsborough National Park, which is scattered with rocky headlands and other interesting natural formations. It’s not the only thrilling wildlife encounter to be had in the Mackay region.

Head to Eungella National Park for the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the oft-elusive platypus. Billed creatures aside, Eungella commands serious attention for other wildlife opportunities, and remarkable Finch Hatton Gorge; this rainforest area sparkles with its waterfalls and rock pools.

Brampton Islands National Park is another natural gem where glowing beaches showcasing turquoise water prove to be extremely enchanting.

The city of Mackay has plenty to keep you occupied. Learn more about its eye-catching collection of stately art deco buildings on a self-guided heritage walk or let the children burn off energy at Bluewater Lagoon.

Fill your day with colour at Orchid House, spotted within Queens Park gardens, which displays hundreds of varieties of this glorious flower. Enjoy more of the outdoors with a visit to the serene Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens.

The Mackay Marina Village is the best place for people-watching opportunities (and yacht admiring) and features several restaurants, bars, and shops.

Heading inland, don’t miss the small town of Marian. It features Melba House, once home to acclaimed diva Dame Nellie Melba.
