Things to See and Do in Snowy Mountains

Kosciuszko National Park is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the Snowy Mountains. Covering almost 700,000ha, this big beast hoards endless gems. First-rate ski fields such as Perisher Valley, Thredbo, Smiggin Holes, and Charlotte Pass lure a stream of snow bunnies each winter.

In warmer months, a series of walking tracks reveal all manner of sights, while fishing, mountain biking, and rock climbing are among other pursuits. If at Thredbo village in summer, take a ride along the thrilling bobsled track.

The park is also home to Australia’s highest peak, 2228m-high Mount Kosciuszko. From Thredbo, a chairlift ride simplifies the task of reaching the summit (a 6km walk is still required to reach the top). It shouldn’t surprise that the views from here are awe-inspiring, no matter the season.

Another cherished Kosciuszko National Park asset is the Yarrangobilly Caves; these fascinating limestone creations can be explored on a guided or self-guided tour.

Also within the Snowy Mountains region is a series of alluring destinations. Start with Jindabyne – it enjoys a stunning setting, situated on the shores of Lake Jindabyne.

At the gateway town of Cooma, the Lambie Town Walk provides a great introduction to Cooma and its heritage, highlighting many points of interest.

The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre is an excellent attraction. It details the story of the Snowy Mountains Scheme through a wide range of displays.

The nearby Gaden Trout Hatchery is a great attraction. Or experience an entertaining insight into farm life with the Boggy Creek Show near Tumbarumba.
